The City of Claxton's water system serves about 3,840 people, more than live inside the city limits, and all of its water comes from groundwater wells. The city's 2024 water quality report lists two, on North Peters Street and West James Street.
Claxton's homes run older: Census survey estimates put the typical home in town at around 1970, and roughly 7 in 10 were built before 1980. We do complete home repiping, and sewer camera inspections that show you exactly what is wrong with a line before anybody digs.
In fiscal 2025, Claxton was awarded a $1,000,000 Community Development Block Grant for sewer improvements in the Grady Street area. And when the city announced smoke testing of its sewer lines in 2021, its notice said that smoke showing up inside a building points to a problem with the plumbing inside.
Across Evans County, about 4 in 10 residents got their household water from their own wells in 2015, by a U.S. Geological Survey estimate. The Evans County Extension office in Claxton can help well owners get their water tested, and the county health department will test a well for bacteria on request. NOAA's nearest station with a 30-year freeze count, just outside Glennville, averages about 30 nights a year at or below freezing. Here is how to get your pipes ready.
