Getting your pipes ready for a south Georgia freeze
Freezing nights do happen here. NOAA's 30-year climate averages show about 21 nights a year at or below freezing at the Fort Stewart weather station, about 30 near Glennville and...

The City of Jesup gets its drinking water from four wells, on 3rd Street, Plum Street, Stratford Road and Sunset Boulevard, according to its 2025 water quality report, and EPA records show the system serving about 10,000 people. The city runs its own sewer system and treatment plant, too.
The city's water FAQ puts it plainly: leaks on the city side are the Water Department's job, and leaks on your own property are a job for a local plumber. The city also keeps an inventory of what each water service line is made of, which you can ask for through City Hall.
Jesup's homes run older than most. Census survey estimates put the typical home's build year around 1970, and about half the homes in town were built before then. Older houses are where complete repiping and sewer camera inspections earn their keep.
Out in the county it is a different picture. EPA records show Wayne County's community water systems serve about 14,500 people, roughly half the county, so many homes rely on their own well. And it gets colder here than people expect: a NOAA weather station about eight miles south of Jesup averages about 42 nights a year at or below freezing, most of them December through February. Here is how to get your pipes ready.
